Perfection is the enemy of progress

Perfection is the enemy of progress

If you’re forever chasing perfection, life can feel frustrating—nothing ever seems ‘good enough.’ Perfectionism has the power to kill creativity and spontaneity, sometimes even stopping you from completing (or starting) projects.

One thing I learned early on in my art journey is to let go of the need for things to be perfect, because:

  1. The tiny flaw I can’t stop focusing on is almost never noticed by anyone else.
  2. Everyone has unique tastes, and beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder.

I used to want to throw away flower cards I’d made just because for one reason or another I didn’t like it - whether it was the colour palette or a flower that didn’t press as beautifully as I’d hoped.

But here’s the thing, when I went to markets, those same cards were often the first to sell! Someone else saw beauty in what I was too critical of.

In nature, the tiny imperfections in a flower like a slightly faded petal or the unique curve of a stem, is what makes it unique. When we chase perfection, we miss the beauty of these little details.

I've learned that when I let go of the need for everything to be perfect, my work becomes more vibrant and authentic.

And it's in the imperfections that creativity thrives.
